EVE Online: Examining the “Icelandic Model” of MMO Development

Alexander "The Mittani" Gianturco, resident EVE Online player and expert over at Gamasutra wrote an interesting article on the "Icelandic Model" of MMO development that CCP Games pursues, asserting that EVE Online's systems-based sandbox design is the key to success for many of the smaller MMO outfits out there who have been trying to compete on the "Big Content" model that games like World of Warcraft pursue.

245 Exhibitors Confirmed For E3

ESA has confirmed 245 exhibitors have signed up for this year's show to date, while also recieving "robust attendee registration".

Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of the ESA, said: "The world is coming to the E3 Expo this June. With groundbreaking announcements expected from computer and video game publishers and developers, this year's E3 Expo is going to be the main event for the entertainment industry in 2010."

MapleStory: Fifth Anniversary Festivities Begin with Cake vs Pie Battles

Nexon is celebrating MapleStory's fifth anniversary next week, and the festivities have already begun! Kicking things off is a Cake vs. Pie battle event, where players will choose either the Cake or Pie faction in an "epic war of desserts." Whichever faction either defeats the designated boss or defends the boss successfully will be rewarded with control of one of the game's four major towns.

Ryzom: Goes Open Source

Winch Gate, the developer and publisher of Ryzom, today announced that their science-fantasy MMO Ryzom is now open source. To that end, Winch Gate has launched the Ryzom Core Development project, which makes available the game's source code including the client, server, and tools as part of the Ryzom Core toolkit.

DS Sales Surpass Game Boy’s

Nintendo has revealed annual and lifetime sales figures for its market-leading DS and Wii systems.

Nintendo shifted 27.11 million DS units during the financial year ended March 31, 2010, taking lifetime sales to 128.89 million.

“In spite of lower unit sales versus last year, Nintendo DS life-to-date sales have surpassed the Game Boy series, which was released in 1989 and became the biggest selling handheld gaming device worldwide,” the company said in a statement.
