Ben Cousins, general manager of Ngmoco Sweden, believes that the recent spate of mobile game cloning is "a blip" that will be eradicated as development budgets increase.
Speaking to us ahead of his keynote address at the inaugural F2P Summit in London next month, Cousins tells us that cloning simply won't be an option as the sector matures and companies are forced to ramp up production values to ensure their games stand out.

South Korean mobile gaming company Gree has announced that profits during the final three months of 2011 more than trebled year on year. Net income during the period, the second quarter of Gree's fiscal year, rose 206 per cent year on year to ¥12.7 billion (£105.7 million), while net sales revenue totalled ¥41.5 billion (£344.6 million), an increase of 190 per cent.

Frogster has announced that its latest game, Eligium, will kick off the open beta beginning February 15th. Once the open beta begins, characters created will not be wiped when the game goes into retail release. Players will also be able to start the game as a member of the Panda race.

Electronic Arts has confirmed a "small number" of staff at its Vancouver studios have been laid off. The company says the job losses, which are believed to have hit both EA Canada and Need For Speed: The Run developer Black Box, were necessary as the publisher continues its shift in focus towards digital. In 2011, EA digital revenues exceeded a billion dollars for the first time.

Square Enix's profit during the nine months ending December 31 rose 175.2 per cent year on year, to just over ¥5 billion (£41.6 million). Net sales across the company totalled ¥95.7 billion (£794.4 million), an increase of just 2.5 per cent year on year. Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Final Fantasy XIII-2 performed well, and the company has seen growth in revenue from games on smartphones and social networks.
