Byron Hails “Significant Progress”

Dr Tanya Byron has written a progress report on the state of digital safety for children since her first recommendations in 2008. 

“In the last two years there has been significant progress on improving children’s digitalsafety which I am pleased to highlight in this report,” she wrote.

Among other measures, Byron suggested that videogame ratings be reformed, with clearer messages to parents and only one rating system used – rather than using both PEGI and BBFC logos.

Evony Abandons Libel Lawsuit

Evony has dropped its libel lawsuit against critical blogger and UK games industry veteran Bruce Everiss.

The American-registered games company abruptly abandoned its lawsuit, taking place in an Australian court, only two days into the hearing. Evony is now facing a bill for the defendants court costs of A$114,000.

Connected Consoles Up 64 Per Cent

The rates of internet connected home consoles has jumped 64 per cent from 2008 to 2009, according to research conducted by Parks Associates.

Consumer demand for online service-enabled TVs is the primary driver for growth, as consoles provide a convenient way to stream videos – which the report says one-third of all US Xbox 360 owners did.

Writing About Dancing About Architecture

I bought two albums today: Vampire Weekend’s Contra and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ It’s Blitz! They are both solid albums that demonstrate each band’s range. Contra seems a bit different than Vampire Weekend’s eponymous debut, lacking a bit of the rustic charm I found disarming. It’s Blitz! is less reckless than earlier Yeah Yeah Yeahs material.
